What was your first experience with hiring like?

Up until her first hire, Hannah had always been the contractor on the other end of the transaction. With her first hire, she got to experience what it was like on the other end – doing the hiring.

It was exciting, she says, but there was a lot of fear because it was something she’d never done. She experienced worries like, “what if I can’t pay this person consistently,” or “what if they can’t do the job as well as I can,” or “I’m afraid to lose control of this business.”

She discovered, however, that those very same feelings occur every time someone’s ready to hire, so she pushed forward. She was at the point where she knew her time was more valuable now than when she first started, because she wasn’t able to get all of her projects done – and done well – any longer. Hiring was paramount.

She was overwhelmed, she said, but she knew she needed to release so she could grow. So she hired a general VA so she could devote her time and energy into other areas.

What roles did you move into as you brought on support?

When you’re a solo show, doing it all yourself, you’re covering all roles keeping the business alive. So, when you bring on a team member you have to ask, “how is this going to change me?”

If you don’t know this, Hannah says, you will struggle to hand over autonomy and will lose control ultimately.

Hannah found herself stepping deeper into a role of leadership and vision-casting. When she hired, it was more evident she needed to step into that role.

“I’m a big believer that our team members are our responsibility as well,” she says. “We can’t just expect to throw them off in the deep end and do awesome, amazing things above and beyond what we expect of them.”

Hannah stepped into her leadership role and asked, “how can we grow now? Where are we going, what are we doing, and what is my vision here?”
