Why Innovation Matters
Innovation must happen to keep things going upward. I recently read a book called Disrupt Yourself by Whitney Johnson in which she explains that personal growth must happen on an S curve – and I believe growth for our businesses must happen in the same way.
There’s a point where you take a dip, there’s risk, then there’s a learning curve – because you’re literally charting new territory – mental, emotional, physical, comprehensional, logistical, everything – new territory.
Then, you see growth – but it won’t last forever – you’ll eventually plateau, you’ll hit the top of the S-curve and you must chart even new territory in order to keep growing.
What we’re experiencing now is a disruption to that S curve – no matter where we are on that S curve in the natural growth of our business before this, it has now been disrupted and we’re finding ourselves back at square 1.
Everything feels like a risk right now. And to be honest, it is. We’re all charting NEW territory.
But Here’s Why Innovation is a Gift
If it’s not new territory – if you’re following the step-by-step instructions of someone who’s already been there done that, then you’re just creating a replica of something already in existence. New territory means you’re building DNA into your business that makes it YOUR own.
At the same time – I’m going to be real and honest – this is a time of natural selection for businesses. Those that can innovate well will make it into the future – those who don’t innovate well, take the wrong path, or don’t innovate at all will struggle.
This is a time where we can look around, take down the competitive walls, and say we’re better together. This is why having a team is such a blessing at this point in time. You might be feeling like it’s a financial burden – and to an extent, it is – but carrying that weight is a responsibility you signed up for when you decided to scale. You have to develop financial resilience and determine your mindset to do what it takes to be a leader now.
