Innovation & Leading Your Business through Covid-19

March 26, 2020

In order to survive times of uncertainty and disruption to our natural growth pattern in business we must utilize our team to begin innovating a new path forward.

How do you lead and pursue growth when you literally don’t have the answers? The answer is simple – innovate – and here’s how!

Listen to the episode now!

Your Leadership Matters

If you haven’t yet tuned into last week’s episode about how you can support your team through world crises, be sure to take a listen here!

To recap, here are a few ways to flex your servant leadership during this time:

  1. Set clear and graceful expectations and guidelines.
  2. If your team members are in-person – do the obvious, allow work from home with grace and understanding!Set clear and graceful expectations and guidelines.
  3. Let them know you are simply THERE FOR THEM.
  4. Be willing to bear more weight – emotional, financial and logistical.
  5. Stay communicative of your vision – it’s more important now than ever!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Why Innovation Matters

Innovation must happen to keep things going upward. I recently read a book called Disrupt Yourself by Whitney Johnson in which she explains that personal growth must happen on an S curve – and I believe growth for our businesses must happen in the same way.

There’s a point where you take a dip, there’s risk, then there’s a learning curve – because you’re literally charting new territory – mental, emotional, physical, comprehensional, logistical, everything – new territory.

Then, you see growth – but it won’t last forever – you’ll eventually plateau, you’ll hit the top of the S-curve and you must chart even new territory in order to keep growing.

What we’re experiencing now is a disruption to that S curve – no matter where we are on that S curve in the natural growth of our business before this, it has now been disrupted and we’re finding ourselves back at square 1.

Everything feels like a risk right now. And to be honest, it is. We’re all charting NEW territory.

But Here’s Why Innovation is a Gift

If it’s not new territory – if you’re following the step-by-step instructions of someone who’s already been there done that, then you’re just creating a replica of something already in existence. New territory means you’re building DNA into your business that makes it YOUR own.

At the same time – I’m going to be real and honest – this is a time of natural selection for businesses. Those that can innovate well will make it into the future – those who don’t innovate well, take the wrong path, or don’t innovate at all will struggle.

This is a time where we can look around, take down the competitive walls, and say we’re better together. This is why having a team is such a blessing at this point in time. You might be feeling like it’s a financial burden – and to an extent, it is – but carrying that weight is a responsibility you signed up for when you decided to scale. You have to develop financial resilience and determine your mindset to do what it takes to be a leader now.
