Trying to “find your purpose” vs. having purpose

September 26, 2019

I used to think I “had a purpose” I was meant to discover – as if the point of life was to first discover your purpose (and who knows how long that could take, right?) and then to journey toward fulfilling it.

This mindset – of waiting and seeking and desperately searching – ultimately left me feeling inadequate, like I wasn’t whole because “my purpose” hadn’t dawned on me yet.

I spent years in anguished waiting, searching, seeking, yearning – trying to discover it. Waiting for the epiphany. Newsflash – it never came.

It wasn’t until I had a vision… I’m in the middle of a field, and God is standing next to me. I’m thrilled, right? I’m in the presence of God!

But He looks at me… and says, “Why have you been standing here for so long?”

I ask Him what He means, isn’t this where I’m supposed to be? I’ve been waiting for Him to tell me my purpose all along. I’ll move when I have my marching orders!

But He points up ahead – surrounding this field are mountains, a trickling stream nearby, a forest with trees a mile high… and He asks me, “why have you stayed right here, when I created all this for you to explore?”

And that’s when I realized… that was PURPOSE all along. Purpose was exploring, adventuring, running to the edge of every part of my being – all for His glory.

I was never meant to stay put. He created strengths, desires, wants and traits in me I was meant to adventure in with JOY. Instead, I was letting them collect dust.

When all the while all He ever wanted was to see me play, create, explore – using the gifts He gave me.

I’ve learned that rather than having a single purpose, simply… God created me with purpose. I HAVE purpose. It’s in me. I AM PURPOSE.

I’ve been waiting for something I was born with, that I have innately. It’s as me as my soul.

I have found so much FREEDOM and JOY in this concept. Joy in the knowledge that I matter, that I have purpose. That I am destined to make impact, to change the world. But Freedom in the how – I’ve learned that this is where God wants to watch me run, jump, play, adventure, shine, explore, serve.

He equipped you and me with purpose. Now it’s our job to do something (anything and everything!!) with it.
